As this is a graphic novel, the illustrations are important. Krashen (1997; 2004a, pp. 91-110) makes a strong case for comics and graphic novels as a major underutilized genre for development of literacy skills, part of the pedagogical core of the “power of reading.” On the eve of a major conference on “Graphica in Education” at Fordham University in January 2009, graphic novelist Josh Neufeld (2009a) reflected on changing approaches to comics, graphic novels and other graphic genres within education in North America: Unlike back in my day, when the only comics in school were hidden behind my notebook during Spanish class (or when I drew my own during lunch hour), there are now official, sanctified comics-in-education programs springing up throughout the country, in schools, libraries, and higher education venues.

The result is a kaleidoscopic cosmic travelogue, an epic of universe-spanning proportions crafted, at least in part, as an effusive tribute to Jack Kirby. Beckett’s floridly minimalist and precise language is so deadpan funny and wise it makes me sob. For this reason comics remains a rich term, while graphic novel contains the suggestion of distaste for the supposedly childish nature of comics and is a term that holds more significance for those marketing comics to bookstores that it does for comics readers and scholars.

There is also the matter of an illegitimate child—though the implications of this might be lost on less savvy children and his conception occurs off-camera and by implication alone. My main problem with storyboarding is how mentally demanding it is. My mom had some old books that were thick just like a chapter book, but they were full of Peanuts comics. Inferencing is a particularly difficult reading strategy to teach.

It’d be a shame if those stories never got told. [Tim O’Neil] As this list was being prepared, news broke that Shigeru Mizuki had died at the age of 93. Last week, I read a fascinating article in the Chicago Tribune about the place of graphic novels in the high school literature curriculum (“Comics in the Curriculum”, December 27, 2012). The author weaves history and fantasy into a dense portrait of the character and her deeds, creating thus a classic take on the genre of horror comics.
