Eliot, though not explicitly associated with the movement, expressed a similar critical-aesthetic philosophy in his essays on John Donne and the metaphysical poets, writers who Eliot believed experienced a complete integration of thought and feeling. I'm up to The Letter of Marque and highly recommend all of them. Later writers drew on these earlier works for inspiration (as Virgil did in composing his Aeneid, based on Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey, between 30-18 BCE) and this tradition of borrowing lasted until the time of Shakespeare (1564-1616 CE) and continues in the present day.

There are books like Emily Danforth’s The Miseducation of Cameron Post which sort of blend the two, as her story takes on sexuality within the early 1990s culture of that issue while also exploring a specific historical event in the setting of the story. In recent times the novel has developed different genres such as the thriller, the whodunnit, the pot-boiler, the western and works of science-fiction, horror and the sex-and-shopping novel. That said, if you do your research thoroughly and effectively, you will be able to write an excellent historical fiction book – and get it published.

While the movie is much more subtle, the book makes clear that the monolith has helped awaken intelligence in these primitive beings, giving them the ability to hunt for food and protect themselves from predators. In her story, The Ring, Steel does not show a partition between fictitious characters and factual historical events.
